EN| Tarifa. The charming little town probably is more famous for its long beaches, perfect surfing conditions, countless bars and cafes, boho fashion and cool parties than for its sights. Nevertheless Tarifa is the home of one of Spain's most versatile artists. Strolling through the small town, you can't miss his impressive works.

Das entzückende Städtchen ist wohl eher bekannt für seine ellenlangen Strände, optimale Surfbedingungen, zahllose Bars und Cafes, Boho-Mode und coole Parties als für seine Sehenswürdigkeiten. Dabei lebt und arbeitet hier einer der vielseitigsten Künstler Spaniens. Wer durch den kleinen Ort schlendert, kommt an seinen eindrucksvollen Werken nicht vorbei.

EN| Manuel Reiné was born on March 7, 1933 in Tarifa from hubmble homes as the second of three children (the fourth died very young). His birthplace do not exist anymore, but, to get in impression, he grew up in the neighborhood of the tobacco shop Pablo Manso in the historic centre. In his family never been any artists although his father was playing the guitar, and so his parents ran a fruit and vegetable store, where Reiné had to lend a hand from an early age. But already here the special talent of the gifted artist became apparent. as he wanted to express himself even as a small boy and therefore began to decorate the peels of watermelons with the tip of a knife and to sell his first art- (works to his customers. The young artist also did not stop at the white house walls of the neighborhood and painted them with pieces of charcoal. These "paintings" pleased so much that they were not painted over during the annual plastering, but left out. A peculiarity in a White Village.
ES| Manuel Reiné nació el 7 de marzo de 1933 en Tarifa, en el seno de una familia sencilla y humilde. El era el segundo de tres hijos (el cuarto murió muy joven). La casa donde nació no existe más pero crecía en el barrio donde todavía está el estanco Pablo Manso, en el centro historico. Nunca hubo artistas en la familia aunque su papá tocaba la guitarra muy lindo. Sus padres llevaban una frutería donde Reiné tuvo que echar una mano desde muy pequeño. Pero aquí ya se mostró el talento especial del artista, que quería expresarse incluso de pequeño empezando a decorar las cáscaras de las sandías con la punta de un cuchillo y vender sus primeras obras de arte a sus clientes. El joven artista ni siquiera se detuvo ante las paredes blancas de las casas del barrio dibujandolas con trozos de carboncillo. Eran tan agradables estos dibujos que no se pintaban durante el revoque anual sino que los conservaron. Una verdadera peculiaridad en un pueblo blanco.
DE| Geboren wurde Manuel Reiné am 7. März 1933 in Tarifa in einer einfachen, bescheidenen Familie als zweites von drei Kindern (das Vierte starb sehr jung). Das Geburtshaus existiert nicht mehr, aber er wuchs auf in dem Viertel im historische Stadtkern, wo sich heute noch der Tabakladen Estanco Pablo Manso befindet. Künstler hat es in der Familie nie gegeben, obwohl der Vater sehr talentiert Gitarre spielte. Seine Eltern führten einen Obst- und Gemüseladen, wo Reiné schon von klein auf mit anpacken mußte. Bereits hier zeigte sich das besondere Talent des begnadeten Künstlers, der sich schon als kleiner Junge künstlerisch ausdrücken wollte und damit begann, die Schalen von Wassermelonen mit der Messerspitze zu verzieren und seine ersten Kunstwerke an seine Kunden zu verkaufen. Auch vor den weißen Hauswänden der Nachbarschaft machte der junge Künstler nicht halt und bemalte diese mit Kohlestücken. Diese „Gemälde“ gefielen so gut, daß sie beim jährlichen Verputzen nicht übermalt, sondern ausgespart wurden. Eine Rarität in einem Weißen Dorf.
EN| Later Reiné studied fine arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid (Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando Madrid), Spain's artistic institution with the longest career and the greatest cultural importance. He was one of the few to receive permission to make a copy of Van Dyck's "Pietá" in the Prado Museum. An absolute privilege granted to only about 30 artists worldwide annually. Reiné was later awarded by the Spanish government for his work, today this valuable work is privately owned by his daughter.
ES| Como la situación económica de sus padres no le permitía cursar estudios superiores, Manuel Reiné se alistó en la infantería en Madrid durante tres años, donde le proporcionaban comida y ropa. En su tiempo libre, Reiné comenzó a estudiar Bellas Artes en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando de Madrid, la institución artística española de mayor trayectoria y trascendencia cultural. Una época dura pero fructífera. Fue uno de los pocos a los que se concedió permiso para realizar una copia en el Museo del Prado. Un privilegio absoluto que sólo se concede a unos 30 artistas en todo el mundo cada año. Reiné ganó por su obra "Pietá" de Van Dyck el primer premio de colorido por el gobierno español, hoy esta valiosa obra es propiedad privada de su hija.
DE| Da die finanzielle Lage seiner Eltern eine höhere Ausbildung nicht ermöglichte, verpflichtete sich Manuel Reiné für drei Jahre bei der Infanterie in Madrid, wo Essen und Kleidung gestellt wurde. In seiner freien Zeit begann Reiné bildende Kunst zu studieren. Eine harte, aber fruchtbare Zeit. an der an der königlichen Akademie der Schönen Künste von San Fernando in Madrid (Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando Madrid), Spaniens künstlerische Institution mit dem längsten Werdegang und der größten kulturellen Bedeutung. Er erhielt als einer der Wenigen die Erlaubnis, im Museum Prado eine Kopie von "Pietá" von Van Dyck zu erstellen. Ein absolutes Privileg, das jährlich nur ca. 30 Künstlern weltweit erteilt wird. Reiné wurde später von der spanischen Regierung für sein Werk ausgezeichnet, heute befindet sich diese wertvolle Arbeit im Privatbesitz seiner Tochter.
EN| Reiné describes himself as a quiet person, he has enjoyed watching and drawing since he was a little boy. At the age of 13 he fell in love with his future wife, with whom the artist has three children. Although he has received several awards, the artist has never pursued a career as an artist, but worked as a technical draftsman and art teacher in Tarifa. Reiné has donated many of his works to the city of Tarifa. Whoever visits Manuel Reiné in his gallery and meets him personally, gets to know a very modest, noble, generous person who radiates a very special light.
ES| Reiné se describe a sí mismo como una persona tranquila; ya de pequeño le gustaba observar y dibujar. A los 13 años se enamoró de su futura esposa, con la que el artista tiene tres hijos. Aunque ha ganado varios premios, el artista nunca aspiró a hacer carrera artística, sino que trabajó como dibujante técnico y profesor de arte en Tarifa. Reiné ha donado muchas de sus obras a la ciudad de Tarifa. Cualquiera que visite a Manuel Reiné en su galería y le conozca en persona llega a conocer a una persona muy humilde, noble y generosa que irradia una luz muy especial.
DE| Reiné selbst bezeichnet sich als eine ruhige Person, er hat sich schon als kleiner Junge damit vergnügt, zu beobachten und zu zeichnen. Bereits mit 13 Jahren hat er sich in seine spätere Frau verliebt, mit der zusammen der Künstler drei Kinder hat. Obwohl mehrfach ausgezeichnet hat der Künstler nie eine Karriere im Bereich der Kunst angestrebt, sondern als technischer Zeichner und Kunstlehrer in Tarifa gearbeitet. Viele seiner Werke hat Reiné der Stadt Tarife gespendet. Wer Manuel Reiné in seiner Galerie besucht und ihn persönlich kennenlernt, lernt einen sehr bescheidenen, noblen, großherzigen Menschen kennen, der ein ganz besonderes Licht ausstrahlt.

EN| Reiné rarely draws or paints in natural surroundings or with a model. His motifs are created in his imagination based on moments and impressions that the artist has experienced. Many of his artworks therefore depict everyday scenes from the former fishing village of Tarifa. From the first moment his paintings reminded me of the Blaue Reiter (Blue Riders), a German group of artists, either because of the spirited colors or because of his expressive painting style. The painter and sculptor works with a wide variety of materials such as clay, limestone, bronze, plaster, oil paints or acrylic. He is not afraid of large formats, but the effect of his paintings is in fact always equally strong - even in very small formats. But this is true, Manuel Reiné never is content with his work and he likes to work on several pieces at the same time.
ES| Reiné raras veces dibuja o pinta en entornos naturales o con modelo. Sus motivos se crean en su imaginación a partir de una experiencia o impresion que el artista ha tenido. Por eso, muchas de sus obras representan escenas cotidianas del antiguo pueblo pesquero de Tarifa. A mí, desde el primer momento sus cuadros me recordaron al grupo aleman de artistas llamado Blaue Reiter (Jinetes Azules), ya sea por los vivazos colores o por su expresivo estilo. Reiné describe su estilo como figurativo y simplificado. El pintor y escultor trabaja con una gran variedad de materiales como arcilla, piedra caliza, bronce, escayola, óleos o acrílicos. No le asustan los grandes formatos, pero el efecto de sus cuadros es siempre igual de intenso, incluso en formatos muy pequeños. Pero eso sí es verdad, Manuel Reiné nunca está contento con sus obras y le gusta trabajar en varias al mismo tiempo.
DE| Reiné zeichnet und malt nur selten in natürlicher Umgebung oder mit einem Modell. Seine Motive entstehen in seiner Fantasie aufgrund von Erlebnissen und Eindrücken, die der Künstler erlebt hat. Viele seiner Kunstwerke stellen daher auch Alltagsszenen aus dem ehemaligen Fischerdorf Tarifa dar. Mich haben vom ersten Augenblick an seine Bilder an die Blauen Reiter erinnert, sei es aufgrund der ausdrucksstarken Farben, sei es aufgrund seines expressiven Malstils. Der Maler und Bildhauer arbeitet mit verschiedensten Materialien wie Ton, Kalkstein, Bronze, Gips, Ölfarben oder Acryl. Angst vor großen Formaten kennt er nicht, die Wirkung seiner Bilder ist aber tatsächlich immer gleich stark - auch bei sehr kleinen Formaten. Eins aber ist wahr, Manuel Reiné ist nie zufrieden mit seiner Arbeit und arbeitet gerne gleichzeitig an verschiedenen Werken.

EN| One of Reiné's most important works is the sculpture Virgen de las Lágrimas, which plays an important role during Semana Santa (Easter Week) and is carried through the city during the processions. The young sculptor was commissioned in 1961 and created the image of the virgin in alder wood. Also by Reiné are the ceiling paintings of various archangels in the church.
ES| Una de las obras más importantes de Reiné es la escultura Virgen de las Lágrimas, que desempeña un papel importante durante la Semana Santa y que se lleva por la ciudad durante las procesiones. El joven escultor recibió el encargo en 1961 y creó la imagen de la virgen en madera de aliso. También son obra de Reiné las pinturas del techo de la iglesia, que representan a varios arcángeles.
DE| Eine der bedeutensten Arbeiten Reinés ist die Skulptur Virgen de las Lágrimas, die eine wichtige Rolle während der Semana Santa spielt und während der Prozessionen durch die Stadt getragen wird. Der junge Bildhauer wurde 1961 damit beautragt und erstellte das Abbild der Jungfrau in Erlenholz. Ebenfalls von Reiné sind in der Kirche die Deckengemälde verschiedener Erzengel.

EN| Strolling through Tarifa you can't miss this monument. Placed directly in front of the castle Castillo de Guzman El Bueno, it is of impressive size. Reiné was commissioned with this work in 1990 to mark the 700th anniversary of the conquest of Tarifa by the Christian forces. The bronze monument was inaugurated in 1992.
ES| Quien pasee por Tarifa no va a perderse este monumento. Situado justo delante del Castillo de Guzmán El Bueno, es de un tamaño impresionante. Reiné recibió el encargo de esta obra en 1990 para conmemorar el 700 aniversario de la conquista de Tarifa por las fuerzas cristianas. El monumento de bronce se inauguró en 1992.
DE| Wer durch Tarifa schlendert, kommt an diesem Denkmal schlichtweg nicht vorbei. Platziert direkt vor der Burg Castillo de Guzman El Bueno ist es von eindrucksvoller Größe. 1990 wurde Reiné mit dieser Arbeit beauftragt zum 700 jährigem Jubiläum der Eroberung von Tarifa durch die christlichen Streitkräfte. Das Denkmal aus Bronze wurde 1992 eingeweiht.

EN| Another historically important monument of Reiné we find just a few walk minutes from the castle. The monument, made of limestone, represents Guzman El Bueno, who sacrificed his own son so that Tarifa would not fall into the hands of the Muslims. The monument consists of two parts joined at chest level. In his designs, Reiné had originally planned a group sculpture to represent this historically significant moment, but for economic reasons it could not be realized.
ES| Otro monumento históricamente importante de Reiné se encuentra a pocos minutos caminando del castillo. El monumento de piedra caliza representa a Guzmán el Bueno, que sacrificó a su propio hijo para que Tarifa no cayera en manos de los musulmanes. El monumento consta de dos partes unidas a la altura del pecho. En sus diseños, Reiné había previsto originalmente una escultura de grupo para representar ese momento históricamente tan significativo, pero no pudo ser realizado por razones económicas.
DE| Ein weiteres historisch wichtiges Denkmal von Reiné finden wir nur wenige Gehminuten von der Burg entfernt. Das Monument aus Kalkstein stellt Guzman El Bueno darstellt, der seinen eigenen Sohn geopfert hat, damit Tarifa nicht in die Hände der Muselmannen fällt. Das Denkmal besteht aus zwei Teilen, die in Brusthöhe zusammengefügt sind. Reiné hatte in seinen Entwürfen ursprünglich eine Gruppenskulptur zur Darstellung des historisch bedeutsamen Moments geplant, die jedoch aus ökonomischen Gründen nicht realisiert werden konnte.

EN| Two central places of Tarifa are the so-called Alameda, where the tourist office is located along with numerous bars, and the Mercado de Abasto with its fish, meat and fruit stands. Both places are connected by a small alley that, although very busy, was for many years unattractive, dark and run down. Manuel Reiné's idea was therefore gratefully accepted to embellish the plain wall with a ceramic mosaic. The 5 x 2 m artwork depicts traditional scenes of the former fishing village and is a tribute to the Almadraba (tuna fishing) and the original means of transport and load, the donkey.
ES| Dos plazas céntricas de Tarifa son la llamada Alameda, donde se encuentra la oficina de turismo además de numerosos bares, y el Mercado de Abasto con sus puestos de pescado, carne y fruta. Ambas plazas están conectadas por un pequeño callejón que, aunque muy frecuentado, durante muchos años tenía un asprecto poco atractivo, oscuro y decaido. Por ello, se aceptó con gratitud la idea de Manuel Reiné de embellecer la pared lisa con un mosaico de cerámica. La obra, de un tamano de 5 x 2 m, representa escenas tradicionales del antiguo pueblo de pescadores y rinde homenaje a la Almadraba y al medio de transporte y carga original, el burro.
DE| Zwei zentrale Plätze von Tarifa sind die sogenannte Alameda, wo sich neben zahlreichen Bars auch die Touristenoffice befindet, und der Mercado de Abasto mit seinen Fisch-, Fleisch- und Obstständen. Beide Orte sind durch ein kleines Gässchen miteinander verbunden, das, obwohl stark frequentiert, viele Jahre wenig attraktiv war, dunkel und heruntergekommen. Die Idee von Manuel Reiné wurde daher dankbar angenommen, die schlichte Wand mit einem Keramikmosaik zu verschönern. Das 5 x 2 m große Kunstwerk stellt traditionelle Szenen des ehemaligen Fischerdorfes dar und ist eine Hommage an die Almadraba (Thunfischfang) und das ursprüngliche Transport- und Lastmittel, den Esel.

EN| In the port of Tarifa there is ubicated another outstanding work by Manuel Reiné. The monument is dedicated to the "men of the sea", the fishermen who, for decades of hard and dangerous work, provided the livelihood of the village, whose tradition still lives on today in the context of the Almadraba (tuna fishing).
ES| En el puerto de Tarifa se encuentra otra obra destacada de Manuel Reiné. El monumento está dedicado a los "Hombres de la Mar", los pescadores que durante décadas aseguraron el sustento del pueblo a través de un trabajo duro y peligroso, cuya tradición pervive aún hoy en la forma de pesca tradicional de la almadraba (pesca del atún).
DE| Im Hafen von Tarifa befindet sich eine weitere herausragende Arbeit von Manuel Reiné. Das Denkmal ist den "Männern vom Meer" gewidmet, den Fischern, die jahrzentelang in harter und gefährlicher Arbeit für den Lebensunterhalt des Dorfes gesorgt haben, dessen Tradition heute noch im Rahmen der Almadraba (Thunfischfang) weiterlebt.

EN| The Feria (popular festival) of Tarifa takes place every year in September. In 2019, the artist, already 86 years old, designed the image for the event poster. It is one of my favorite paintings by Reiné. You can find how the poster looked like originally in the article from EuropaSur.
